HISTORY

The Mohawk Trail was originally a foot path used by Indigenous People as a trade route between the Atlantic Tribes and those living in upstate New York. The peak of that foot path, now known as Whitcomb Summit, was originally called Spirit Mountain.

In 1914, the first business was opened here in a small roadside shack, offering souvenirs and refreshments to people traveling along the Mohawk Trail. A two story structure, the Summit House, and small cottages soon followed. With the rise of the personal automobile, this high altitude retreat became a favorite spot for tourists and vacationers traveling along the Trail.

In 1923, a new neighbor arrived in the form of The Elk on the Trail Monument - a large bronze statue of an elk that sits adjacent to our property. The statue was designed by Eli Harvey and paid for by the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks to honor those killed in WWI.

The original store and restaurant burned down in a hurricane in 1938. Many of the cottages fell into disrepair over the years and were replaced with the current motel building in the 1960s, ensuring that Whitcomb Summit would continue to welcome guests and travelers to this day.

Blue Vista Motor Lodge is proud to honor the deep histories of Whitcomb Summit and Spirit Mountain while also offering updated amenities for the modern day visitor to enjoy.

Tips From Our Team

Weather:

We are close to nature here on the summit, which also means we are close to the weather! Clouds, wind, and light moving over the mountain are thrilling to watch but can bring rapid changes in temperature and conditions. We recommend packing extra layers, seasonally appropriate footwear and a bathing suit to make the most of your stay. Please check the local forecast prior to leaving for your trip: Local Weather

Food Options:

Please be advised that there is no restaurant or bar located on site and food options on the mountain are limited, especially in the winter. We do offer snacks and refreshments in our Canteen area and your room is equipped with a microwave, mini-fridge, and coffee maker with coffee and tea. We have assembled lists of local restaurants, stores and other resources that you can peruse in our reception area. Most of these options are within a 10 mile radius of our location. Please plan ahead if you are arriving later in the day and do not want to go in to North Adams for dinner.

Outdoor Amenities :

Hot tubs, sauna and fire pits are for overnight guest use only. Fire pits are available every evening. The sauna and large hot tub are open to guests daily, weather permitting. Guests can rent out the smaller hot tub for private use for an additional fee of $50 per hour. Bathing suits are required in the sauna and hot tubs.
